Apple today announced a new textbook experience for the iPad with the new iBooks 2. This is aimed at those students who want to have the same reading experience as a text book but without having to carry the load of the books. This product comes with some useful features like you can tap a word to access the glossary definition, highlight with your fingers and also read the interactive reviews at the end of each product.

So what is the market for such a product? Well apple thinks that there are 1.2 million students who use the iPad and that makes for a pretty strong business case for the text book experience product. Also remember that Kindle Fire has a great reading experience and it is selling like hot cakes and giving the iPad a run for its money.

Apple is claiming that this is going to be really beneficial for the America’s education system  because United States are ranked 17th in reading, 31st in math and 23rd in science. However the product is not just limited to US and it is applicable to students all over.

The product will also have a tool kit which will allows educational material creator to develop apps that can be used as part of the iBooks 2. This means that developers all over the world can create interactive and ebook kind of products and host it on the iBooks 2.
