After huge speculations of will he or won’t he, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has openly protested the SOPA or Stop Online Piracy Act. He expressed his displeasure on the new act that the US government is trying to impose on the free internet. In a post he has urged all the people to tell their congressmen to be pro-Internet.
It is very interesting because Mark hadn’t posted In Facebook (publicly at least) for 3 years and after this long silence his first post is actually to protest SOPA and that is a pretty important statement. Here’s what he posted on his Facebook page:
“The internet is the most powerful tool we have for creating a more open and connected world. We can’t let poorly thought out laws get in the way of the internet’s development. Facebook opposes SOPA and PIPA, and we will continue to oppose any laws that will hurt the internet.
The world today needs political leaders who are pro-internet. We have been working with many of these folks for months on better alternatives to these current proposals. I encourage you to learn more about these issues and tell your congressmen that you want them to be pro-internet.”
While the number of companies joining the protest is just growing by the day there is no news from the US government on how it is going to react to this protest. It’s not just the companies; millions of people too are joining in this wave. Google asked people to signup for this protest and they had 4.5 million people signing up for the protest, in just one day. That’s an amazing response to the protest and one which the US government can’t and shouldn’t ignore, unless they want to commit a political suicide.
