In a preemptive action to the much anticipated iPad 3 release in March, Samsung has released the second version of the highly successful Galaxy Tab, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2. There are no major surprises here and the specifications are pretty similar to the predecessor, but the big update is that this tab comes with Android 4, Ice Cream Sandwich. This is well augmented by Samsung’s TouchWiz overlay.
The high level specifications of the Galaxy Tab are that it comes with a 1GHZ dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, a pair of cameras, and the choice of either 16GB or 32GB of RAM. This is pretty standard with what comes with Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus (which was released last September) so the industry analysts are wondering what the point was in releasing the G Tab 2.
Anyway, Samsung has announced that the Tab 2 will be available in the UK and surrounding geographies starting March which coincides with the iPad 3 rumors. In the US the Tab 2 will most likely partner with AT&T and T-Mobile which hosted the first version of the Galaxy Tab.
There might be multiple reasons why Samsung could have release the Tab 2. We’ve already spoken about the impending iPad 3 release. Then there is the Windows 8 tablet news that is trickling in and by the holiday season that news might be a reality, so Samsung wants to capture as much market before the Windows tablets are out and up for grabs. Then there is a demand from the Android customers to have a tablet that is on the Android 4. All these reasons combined could have resulted in a low-profile release of the new Galaxy Tab.
